Course
The Cape Cod Marathon course
All races start and finish at Mullen Hall School on Katharine Lee Bates Road in Falmouth village, about 7 feet above sea level: the half runs on Saturday, the marathon and 5K on Sunday. The marathon heads out on Shore Street, Surf Drive and the Shining Sea Bikeway, then runs miles 3 to 6 on the Falmouth Road Race course in reverse, past Nobska Lighthouse and into Woods Hole, where the course reaches its high point of just 49 feet.

From there it swings back along Surf Drive to Falmouth Heights and Menauhant Road (the halfway mat), heads out through East Falmouth on Davisville and Acapesket Roads, and retraces the Heights to the finish. The official profile adds up to about 600 feet of climbing in many short rises rather than one big hill, including a short climb at mile 12 that you meet again at mile 23.4. Roads stay open to traffic and are narrow in places, so you run on the right with the traffic; the marathon is a Boston qualifier with a 6-hour limit (13:43 per mile).

- Marathon, Half marathon, 5K
- Weather on race day
- Falmouth in early October usually ranges from the mid 40s to the low 60s °F over the day, so the 8:00 a.m. starts tend to land in the 50s. Breezes off Vineyard Sound can be cool and gusty on the exposed shore roads, and showers are possible, so bring a throwaway layer and run by effort into any headwind along Surf Drive.
What to train for
This course rewards rhythm more than raw climbing strength: dozens of short rises add up to about 600 feet, so do your long runs on rolling roads and hold effort, not pace, over each bump.
Once a week, run 8 to 10 x 45 seconds up a short hill at 5K effort with an easy jog down, to build the snap you need for Nobska and the mile 12 rise that returns at 23.4.
Build to 18 to 20 mile long runs with the last 5 to 6 miles at goal pace, and rehearse fueling every 30 to 40 minutes, since water stops come about every 2 miles. On windy days, practice tucking in behind other runners on exposed stretches.

Taper
Tapering for the Cape Cod Marathon
Start the taper two to three weeks before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course rolls, so keep one short session on undulating ground in the first taper week. With the race on October 10, 2027, your taper starts around September 22, 2027.

Cape Cod Marathon training questions
How long should I train for the Cape Cod Marathon?
Most runners give a marathon sixteen to twenty weeks of focused training on top of an existing base. The plan above counts back from your actual race date, so if you have less time than that it builds the best plan the remaining weeks allow rather than pretending you have longer.
Is the Cape Cod Marathon course hilly?
Rolling. All races start and finish at Mullen Hall School on Katharine Lee Bates Road in Falmouth village, about 7 feet above sea level: the half runs on Saturday, the marathon and 5K on Sunday.
What is the weather usually like at the Cape Cod Marathon?
Falmouth in early October usually ranges from the mid 40s to the low 60s °F over the day, so the 8:00 a.m. starts tend to land in the 50s. Breezes off Vineyard Sound can be cool and gusty on the exposed shore roads, and showers are possible, so bring a throwaway layer and run by effort into any headwind along Surf Drive.
When should I start tapering for the Cape Cod Marathon?
Start the taper two to three weeks before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course rolls, so keep one short session on undulating ground in the first taper week. With the race on October 10, 2027, your taper starts around September 22, 2027.
