The Bluegrass Half course
The Bluegrass Half Marathon starts at 7:30 a.m. on Commerce Street beside Wild Wing Cafe in downtown Johnson City and finishes in the lot of the Farmers Market Pavilion at Founders Park. The course is USATF certified and runs as one loop that relay teams split at three exchanges: Local Motion on Alabama Street, Southside Elementary School and the Tomy Thai lot at State of Franklin Road and Lyle Street.

Water and Gatorade are served at the Burley parking lot (Legion Street and State of Franklin), at Walnut and Earnest Streets and at Market Street and Gold Star Boulevard, plus drinks at every exchange. Teams of two to four runners can share the distance, so it is a friendly first half for a group of friends.

- Weather on race day
- September in the Tri-Cities is warm: the NOAA normals for Bristol list an average high of 81 °F and a low of 56 °F. The 7:30 a.m. start catches the cooler part of the day, but it can feel warm by the final miles. Summer training in the heat pays off here, so hydrate well the day before and dress light.
What to train for
Build long runs to 10 to 12 miles over the summer so 13.1 feels familiar by late September.
The route is a city loop with plenty of turns, so practice holding a steady effort through corners and short changes in grade on your local streets.
Run one or two tempo sessions of 4 to 6 miles at goal pace each month, and practice drinking from cups since the aid comes at a few fixed points. Relay runners can sharpen with 6 x 3 minutes at a strong effort and rehearse a quick handoff.
