Read the full course notes
It is a fast, flat, fully paved course, USATF certified and Boston qualifying, with aid every 1 to 2 miles from 17 stations on the marathon. Roads are not fully closed and traffic control is limited, so stay alert at crossings. The course closes at 2:00 p.m., which gives marathoners six and a half hours.
- Terrain
- Flat
- Distances
- Marathon, Half marathon, 10K, 5K
- Weather on race day
- Mid-September mornings in Bismarck are usually crisp, around 45–55 °F at the start, with afternoon highs in the 70s. The air is dry and the open river paths can be breezy, so start in a throwaway layer and expect it to warm noticeably in the final hour.
What to train for
A flat, paved course rewards even pacing, so make goal-pace work the core of your plan: long runs of 18 to 20 miles with the last 6 to 8 at marathon pace, plus a weekly tempo run of 4 to 6 miles.
Practice holding effort rather than pace into a headwind on exposed sections, since the river paths can be windy.
Pace groups run from 3:30 to 5:00, so pick the one that matches your training and rehearse that exact pace on long runs. Fuel every 30 to 40 minutes in training with what you plan to use on race day.

Taper
Tapering for the Bismarck Marathon
Start the taper two to three weeks before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on September 18, 2027, your taper starts around August 31, 2027.
