Course
The Baystate Marathon course
Both races start and finish in front of the Tsongas Center at Father Morissette Boulevard and Arcand Drive, and everyone starts together at 8:00 a.m. The marathon is a double loop of about 10.1 miles: west past Lowell's canals along Pawtucket and Middlesex Streets, through Chelmsford and Vinal Square to the Tyngsboro Bridge, then back down the far bank of the Merrimack on Pawtucket Boulevard (Route 113), with a final run past LeLacheur Park and the old mill buildings on Perkins Street.

The half is a shorter double loop between the Rourke and Aiken Street bridges. The organizers call it one of the flattest, fastest marathons in the country: the main bumps are a gradual rise over the old railroad bridge near mile 2, a minor one near mile 5, and a quarter-mile hill by the O'Donnell Bridge around mile 24, rewarded with a gentle downhill. Much of the course stays open to traffic, so stay alert at intersections.

- Weather on race day
- Mid-October in Lowell usually brings crisp mornings: normal lows are around 40 °F and highs in the low 60s °F, so expect roughly 40–50 °F at the 8:00 a.m. start. That is classic marathon weather; bring a throwaway layer for the start and be ready for the occasional wet or breezy year.
What to train for
Baystate rewards even pacing, so make goal-pace work the core of your build: long runs of 18 to 20 miles with the last 6 to 10 at marathon pace, plus a midweek tempo run of 5 to 8 miles.
Marathon pacers target 2:50 to 4:10 in 10-minute steps, which makes it easy to lock into a Boston-qualifying rhythm.
Water stops come about every 1.5 miles with lemon-lime Gatorade, and caffeinated GU gels are handed out at miles 7 and 17, so practice that fueling plan in training. Because you pass the same landmarks twice, rehearse the second loop mentally and save something for the quarter-mile rise near mile 24.

Taper
Tapering for the Baystate Marathon
Start the taper two to three weeks before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week.
