Course
The Lake Dunmore Triathlon course
The race is based at Branbury State Park on Lake Dunmore, tucked under Rattlesnake Point in the Green Mountains. The 1,500-meter swim is two loops in clear, calm water that averages about 8 feet deep, never more than 70 meters from shore, with a beach start in waves of up to 50.
Read the full course notes
The 28-mile bike is two rolling loops around Lake Dunmore and Fern Lake with right-hand turns only; the one real climb gains 190 feet over three quarters of a mile at up to 7%, and the full ride totals about 1,390 feet of climbing on roads that stay open to light traffic (Route 7 has a wide shoulder). The 10K run is a shaded out-and-back on Route 53, with two short hills of about 45 feet at 0.25 and 2.25 miles that become descents on the way home, about 265 feet of gain in all. Start time is 8:00 a.m. with a four-hour cutoff.

- Race-day conditions
- Lake Dunmore is a warm-water swim: the organizers list typical water temperatures of 74–82 °F, and wetsuits are permitted but not required. Late August mornings in central Vermont usually start in the mid 50s to low 60s °F, with afternoon highs in the upper 70s °F, so expect a cool start and comfortable conditions, with the shaded run course helping if the sun is out.
What to train for
The bike decides your day: ride two-loop routes with a 3 to 5 minute climb in each loop and practice holding steady power over it instead of attacking, so your legs are fresh for the second lap.
Build to 30-mile rides with 2 x 20 minutes at Olympic effort on rolling roads, and stay alert on open roads by riding your own line.
For the run, add short hill strides at the start of brick runs to mirror the climb out of the park at 0.25 miles, then settle to goal pace on the flat. Swim two-loop sets in open water, sighting every six strokes, and practice beach starts.

Taper
Tapering for the Lake Dunmore Triathlon
Start the taper seven to ten days before race day. Trim the volume in all three sports, keep short race-pace efforts in each, and do one last short brick so running off the bike still feels familiar. The course rolls, so keep one short session on undulating ground in the first taper week. With the race on August 29, 2027, your taper starts around August 20, 2027.
