    Course

    The Swindon Half course

The Swindon Half Marathon starts and finishes at Coate Water Country Park on the south-east edge of town and runs on closed roads out into the Wiltshire countryside past the villages of Wanborough, Badbury and Medbourne. The first 8 km or so are mostly flat, the road starts to rise from about 11 km, and the real test is a sustained climb between roughly 13 and 16 km up to the course's high point, with wide views back over Swindon.

From the top the route drops away for a fast downhill run back towards town, and the final stretch alongside the lake at Coate Water makes a scenic finish. Total climbing is about 170 m, water stations sit at 5, 10 and 15 km, and the cut-off is 3 hours because of the road closures.

Late September around Swindon usually means 10–15 °C at the 9:00 start, with afternoon highs near 18–19 °C on the nearby Met Office record. The open countryside section can feel breezy and the climb from 13 km will warm you up, so start a little conservatively and take water at each of the three stations.

    What to train for

This course is decided on the climb between 13 and 16 km and on how well you use the descent after it.

Once a week, finish a long run on a hill: 3 km of steady uphill effort after 12–14 km of easy running teaches you to climb on tired legs.

Add hill reps of 6–8 x 2 minutes at 10K effort with a jog back down. Then practise relaxed, fast downhill running with short strides and quick feet so you can gain time in the last 5 km without hammering your quads.
