Course
The Manchester Marathon course
The race starts beside Old Trafford and heads south down Chester Road through Stretford and Sale to Altrincham, where the course turns at around 20 km (mile 12 to 13). The return leg winds back through Timperley, Sale Moor and Chorlton-cum-Hardy, then through Hulme to a city-centre finish on Oxford Road.

The organisers bill it as the UK's flattest major marathon: there is no climb worth naming, just long, straight stretches of wide closed road. Music and cheer points line the whole route and the organisers count more than 150,000 supporters, so quiet miles are rare. The course is marked in miles, so expect mile boards rather than kilometre markers.

- About 52,000 participants expected in 2027, a record for the event
- Weather on race day
- Mid-April in Greater Manchester usually means a cool morning, typically 6–13 °C at the start, with a fair chance of showers and a breeze. That is close to ideal marathon weather: wear a throwaway layer in the start pen, and in the occasional warm year adjust your goal pace from the start rather than late in the race.
What to train for
A flat course means the same stride and the same muscles for 42 km, so legs that hold up late decide the last 10 km more than climbing strength.
Build long runs to 30–32 km with the final 8–10 km at goal marathon pace, and add a weekly tempo of 6–10 km at threshold.
The out-and-back to Altrincham is long and straight, so practise locking into an even rhythm without chasing the runners around you. Rehearse fuelling every 30–40 minutes on long runs, because a flat, fast race tempts you to skip it.

Your build to race day
Taper
Tapering for the Manchester Marathon
Start the taper two to three weeks before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on April 18, 2027, your taper starts around March 31, 2027.
