Course
The Belfast City Marathon course
The marathon starts on Prince of Wales Avenue in the Stormont Estate and finishes in Ormeau Park, after a tour through all four quarters of Belfast: east, south, west and north. The team relay changeovers trace the shape of the route: Montgomery Road in east Belfast (about 6.8 km), Boucher Road in south Belfast (about 17.7 km), the Falls Road in the west (about 25 km) and Duncairn Gardens in the north (about 33 km), before the final 9 km take you back across the city to Ormeau Park.

The course is AIMS certified and runs on closed roads, with a six-hour time limit. Expect rolling city roads rather than a pancake-flat course, with neighbourhood support in every quarter.

- Weather on race day
- Early May in Belfast is usually cool and changeable, typically 7–13 °C at the 9:00 start, with a shower and a breeze likely at some point. That is good marathon weather: wear a light throwaway layer to the start, and adjust your effort to a wet or windy patch rather than fighting it.
What to train for
A rolling city route rewards runners who can hold a steady effort over changing gradients.
Run your long runs on undulating roads, build to 30–32 km, and put 8–10 km at goal pace into the second half of them.
Add a weekly hill session of 6–10 × 60–90 seconds, and practise relaxed downhill running so your quads arrive at the last 9 km in good shape. The route crosses the whole city, so rehearse fuelling every 30–40 minutes from early on rather than waiting for the late miles.

Taper
Tapering for the Belfast City Marathon
Start the taper two to three weeks before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course rolls, so keep one short session on undulating ground in the first taper week. With the race on May 2, 2027, your taper starts around April 14, 2027.
