The Shamrock Marathon course
Flat, coastal, and fast, run along the Virginia Beach oceanfront and through Fort Story, finishing on the boardwalk near the King Neptune statue. There is essentially no elevation change on the course, which makes it a popular spring Boston qualifier and a common choice for a first marathon.
Weather on race day
Mid-March on the Virginia coast is cool and often windy: starts in the 40s, highs in the 50s. The oceanfront sections are fully exposed and the wind can be a substantial factor in either direction.
What to train for
Even-effort pacing into wind. With no hills to modulate effort, the wind is the only variable, so practise holding effort rather than pace on exposed routes. Otherwise this is a straightforward flat-marathon build built on goal-pace long runs.
