Course
The São Silvestre de Braga course
The 48th edition starts and finishes in Praça da República, the main square of Braga, at 19:00, so the whole race is run at night under the city's festive lights. From the square the route crosses the historic centre by Rua dos Chãos, Rua do Carmo and past the cathedral, then follows Rua de São Lázaro and Avenida da Liberdade, the city's grand boulevard, to a turnaround at Rotunda Santos da Cunha.

There are three out-and-back turnarounds in all (Rotunda Santos da Cunha, Largo São João da Ponte and Avenida João Paulo II) before the return by Avenida 31 de Janeiro and Rua dos Chãos to the square. There are no big hills, but the centre has gentle rises and falls and some stone-paved streets, so expect a lively, rolling 10 km rather than a dead-flat one. Water is served at 5 km and at the finish, and the time limit is 2 hours.

- Weather on race day
- Braga in late December is usually cool and wet: at the 19:00 start it is usually around 6–10 °C, and December averages about 15 rainy days. Wear long sleeves or a light layer, gloves if it is cold, and keep a dry layer on until the start; the cool air suits fast running, so you will need little water during the race.
What to train for
Three hairpin turnarounds and plenty of corners in the old centre reward agility, so practise 180-degree turns and quick re-accelerations in your interval sessions.
Build towards sessions like 5 x 1 km at 10 km race pace with 90 seconds of recovery, plus a weekly run on gently undulating roads.
The race starts at 19:00 in December, so do some key sessions in the evening, in the dark and cold, to rehearse your pre-race meal timing and warm-up. It falls in the middle of the holidays, so plan your last two weeks around Christmas and arrive at the start line fresh.

Taper
Tapering for the São Silvestre de Braga
Start the taper seven to ten days before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course rolls, so keep one short session on undulating ground in the first taper week. With the race on December 27, 2026, your taper starts around December 18, 2026.
