Course
The Sangre de Cristo course
Every distance starts and finishes at Music Meadows Ranch beside the Grape Creek Trailhead outside Westcliffe, on the western flank of the Wet Mountain Valley. The races run almost entirely on the Rainbow Trail, a mostly double-track trail built by the Civilian Conservation Corps along the boundary of the Sangre de Cristo Wilderness, and the festival uses about 21 miles of it.

On recent editions each race has opened and closed with an out-and-back on the USFS road toward Music Pass, the high point at 11,412 feet. The access trails to the Horn Creek and Venable aid stations are rocky and technical, the trickiest footing of the weekend. The 100-mile, 100K, 50-mile and 50K run on Saturday, the 27K and 8-mile on Sunday, and the 100-mile (capped at 50 runners) has a 38-hour limit.

- Field
- Up to 350 runners across all distances (100-mile capped at 50)
- Weather on race day
- Late September in the Sangre de Cristos swings from an average low near 35 °F to a high near 70 °F, and the first snow of the season can arrive around race weekend. Rain, wind, hail and storms are all possible, so the long distances need warm layers for the night and a waterproof shell. The aspens are just starting to turn, which makes this a beautiful weekend to be on the trail.
What to train for
Train for rocky mountain trail at altitude: long runs on technical terrain plus a weekly hill session of 6–10 climbs of 3–5 minutes at a strong, steady effort.
Practice a long climb and descent of a big pass, since the Music Pass road comes both early and late.
For the 100K and 100-mile, run at least one session through the night with your headlamp and full cold-weather kit, and rehearse eating on the move for many hours. Runners from low elevation gain a lot from a few days in the valley before the start.

Your build to race day
Taper
Tapering for the Sangre de Cristo
Start the taper two to three weeks before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is hilly, so keep one short hill session in the first taper week to keep the climbs familiar. With the race on September 25, 2027, your taper starts around September 7, 2027.
