The Colfax Marathon course

Denver's city marathon, run along Colfax Avenue and through Sloan's Lake, passing through Empower Field at Mile High twice and finishing in City Park. The profile is close to flat by Colorado standards. The altitude, at a little over 5,000 feet, is what makes the race hard for visitors rather than any feature of the course.

Weather on race day

Mid-May in Denver starts cold, often in the 40s, and warms quickly under strong high-altitude sun. Late-season snow and 70-degree afternoons have both happened, sometimes in the same week.

What to train for

Altitude adjustment and sun management for anyone arriving from lower ground. Expect to give up meaningful time per mile compared with a sea-level race, and set the goal accordingly rather than chasing your flat-course pace. Arrive either two days before or two weeks before, not in between.
