    Course

    The Rumpus in Bumpass course

Rumpus in Bumpass opens the Virginia season at Pleasants Landing Marina on Lake Anna, with the Olympic starting at 9:00 a.m. and the sprint at 9:30. Both swims (1,500 meters and 750 meters) are in the southeast part of the lake, about a quarter mile from where the warmer 'hot side' flows into the main lake, on a supported course with two right turns and sighting buoys every 75 meters.

The Olympic bike is two loops of about 24 miles on good pavement with mostly right turns, views across the lake and about 830 feet of climbing; the sprint rides one 12-mile loop with about 435 feet, flat in places with a few short climbs off the causeways. The run leaves transition through the woods and down a gravel road to a closed, paved, lightly rolling out-and-back past fields, forest and the South Anna River: twice for the Olympic (about 270 feet of gain) and once for the sprint. It sold out in 2026, and 2027 registration opens November 1.

    Race-day conditions
Mid-April water at Lake Anna is usually in the mid-60s °F, with the reading posted the Thursday before the race; wetsuits are legal at 78 °F and below and required for the torso at 60 °F or lower, so plan to race in one. Air temperatures in central Virginia in April usually run from the mid-40s to about 70 °F, so it can be chilly in transition and pleasant by the run. Bring a warm layer and consider arm warmers for the bike.

    What to train for

As an early-season race, Rumpus rewards winter work: get your open-water swims in your wetsuit in cool water before race day, practicing sighting on buoys every 75 meters and steady breathing in the first few minutes.

On the bike, build to 30 to 35 mile rides on rolling roads with 2 to 3 x 10 minutes at Olympic effort, holding power over the short rises rather than surging.

The run starts on trail and gravel before the road, so include a few runs off-road and weekly bricks of 45 to 60 minutes on the bike straight into 20 minutes at 10K pace. Practice a smooth T1 with cold hands, since an April swim exit can make a wetsuit and helmet buckle tricky.
