Course
The Pasadena Triathlon course
Everything happens at the Rose Bowl, and the triathlon runs in reverse order: run first, then bike, then a pool swim. The 5K (about 3.1-mile) run is one clockwise lap of the Rose Bowl loop from the south side of the stadium, with a slight rise early and a gentle descent back to transition.

The 15K (about 9.3-mile) bike is three clockwise laps of the same car-free loop, with short ups and downs each lap. You then run to the Rose Bowl Aquatics Center, leave your shoes outside the deck, jump in feet first from the diving tank and swim 150 m snake-style, ducking under the lane line at each end. Waves are seeded by projected finish time between 7:03 and 7:15 a.m., and 2027 is the race's 21st year at the Rose Bowl, moved to February while the aquatics center is upgraded.

- Race-day conditions
- The pool is kept at 70 °F or warmer and wetsuits are not needed. Early February mornings in Pasadena usually start in the mid 40s to low 50s °F and warm toward the upper 60s by afternoon, and February is one of the wetter months, so a damp morning is possible. Bring a warm layer for the start and something dry to change into after you finish wet.
What to train for
Because you swim last, practice swimming with your heart rate already high: finish some bike sessions with 150 to 300 m of steady swimming within a few minutes of getting off.
Do run-to-bike bricks too, such as a 3-mile tempo run straight into 9 to 10 miles of riding over short rises, ideally as three repeats of a loop like race day.
Ducking under lane lines and turning at the wall takes practice, so rehearse a snake swim in your own pool. Start the run relaxed: it is a short race, but the swim comes when you are most tired.

Your build to race day
Taper
Tapering for the Pasadena Triathlon
Start the taper seven to ten days before race day. Trim the volume in all three sports, keep short race-pace efforts in each, and do one last short brick so running off the bike still feels familiar. The course rolls, so keep one short session on undulating ground in the first taper week. With the race on February 7, 2027, your taper starts around January 29, 2027.
