    Course

    The McAllen Marathon course

Every race starts and finishes at the McAllen Convention Center, and the marathon runs the same city loop twice. From the Convention Center the route heads east on Galveston and Houston avenues, turns north on 2nd Street, runs west along Violet and Zinnia avenues, then returns southwest on Main Street and Business 83 before setting off on the second lap.

The Rio Grande Valley is about as flat as road racing gets, and the course is a certified Boston qualifier. Everything happens on one Saturday: the marathon, half and 6-person relay start at 7:00 a.m., and the 10K and 5K at 7:10 a.m. Expect a big local crowd from across the Valley and northern Mexico cheering you through the City of Palms.

Expected to draw more than 12,000 runners and spectators
    Weather on race day
Mid-January in McAllen is usually mild at the 7:00 a.m. start, around 50–60 °F, warming into the 70s by late morning, and the Gulf air can feel humid. A passing cold front sometimes brings a cool north wind instead, so bring a throwaway layer and ease your pace if the sun turns warm on the second lap.

    What to train for

A flat, two-lap course rewards even pacing and steady fueling more than hill strength.

Build long runs to 18 to 20 miles with the last 6 to 8 at goal marathon pace, and take a gel every 30 to 40 minutes in those runs.

Since the second lap repeats the first, rehearse it: run a long workout as two identical halves and aim to make the second slightly faster. Add a weekly tempo of 4 to 6 miles at half marathon effort to raise your cruising speed on flat roads.

    Taper

    Tapering for the McAllen Marathon

Start the taper two to three weeks before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on January 16, 2027, your taper starts around December 29, 2026.
