The Austin Marathon course
A course that runs south across the river and back north through the middle of the city, spending most of its middle miles climbing in a way first-timers rarely expect from Texas. The long grind up South Congress and the hills through the centre of the race are the defining features, and the finish comes on Congress Avenue in front of the Texas Capitol.
Weather on race day
Mid-February in Austin is genuinely a coin flip: a cold, windy morning in the 30s and a humid 65-degree one are both entirely normal. Humidity, not temperature, is what usually decides how the day feels.
What to train for
Hill repeats and heat contingency. Train the climbs, and go in with two pace plans, because a warm and humid Austin morning makes a flat-course goal time the wrong target. Practise drinking early rather than waiting until you feel you need it.

Austin Marathon training questions
How long should I train for the Austin Marathon?
Most runners give a half marathon twelve to sixteen weeks of focused training on top of an existing base. The plan above counts back from your actual race date, so if you have less time than that it builds the best plan the remaining weeks allow rather than pretending you have longer.
