Course
The El Paso Marathon course
All three races are based at San Jacinto Plaza, and for 2027 the marathon returns to its roots with a downtown finish, as in its first edition in 2007. The marathon heads east out of downtown along Montana Avenue, skirting Fort Bliss, to a loop through the Cielo Vista and McRae Boulevard neighborhoods around miles 12 to 16, then comes back along Montana into the city center.

The half uses the same Montana corridor with a shorter turnaround loop near Pennsylvania Circle Park. The organizers say the downtown finish gives the course a net decline, so the return leg trends downhill, and the whole race runs at about 3,700 feet above sea level. The marathon is a Boston qualifier.

- Weather on race day
- Late February in El Paso is usually dry and sunny, with mornings around 38–45 °F and afternoon highs in the low to mid 60s. Humidity is low (around 40%) and spring winds can pick up, so expect crisp racing that turns warm in the sun for later finishers. Dry desert air and altitude speed up fluid loss, so drink to a plan even when you do not feel hot.
What to train for
Unless you train at elevation, you will feel the 3,700 feet, so set your goal pace a little conservatively and judge the early miles by effort.
Be patient on the outbound miles and save your legs for the downhill-trending return: practice relaxed downhill running at marathon pace in your long runs so your quads are ready.
Long, straight avenues like Montana reward metronomic pacing, so rehearse 10 to 14 mile segments at goal pace. Train in the wind when you can, and on race day tuck in behind other runners when it blows.

Taper
Tapering for the El Paso Marathon
Start the taper two to three weeks before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course rolls, so keep one short session on undulating ground in the first taper week. With the race on February 28, 2027, your taper starts around February 10, 2027.
