    Course

    The Maratona de Pomerode course

Pomerode bills itself as Brazil's most German town, and since 2008 this marathon has leaned into it with folk groups, brass bands, cuca tastings and, famously, a chopp (draught beer) station at km 39.5 of the marathon and km 18 of the half. The 21 km and 42 km start together at 5:30 on the Sunday from the Pórtico Turístico Sul, the town's southern gateway on Jorge Lacerda, and finish at the Pavilhão de Eventos on Rua 21 de Janeiro.

The official route map shows the marathon heading north from the centre through Testo Rega towards Testo Alto and back, with only about 128 m of climbing over 42.2 km and the gentle high point around halfway. The 6 km runs on the Saturday at 17:30. The marathon has a 6-hour limit with cut-offs at km 24 (3:24:59), km 31.5 (4:27:59) and km 37 (5:24:59), and water every 1.5 to 3 km.

    Weather on race day
Late October in the Itajaí valley is warm and often humid: neighbouring Blumenau averages about 16–26 °C in October with plenty of rain (around 160 mm), so the 5:30 start is the coolest part of the day. Expect sticky air as the sun comes up, start conservatively and use the water stations, which come every 1.5 to 3 km.

    What to train for

With little climbing, this is a course for even pacing, so build long runs to 30 to 32 km with the last 10 km at goal marathon pace.

The 5:30 start means a 3:00 to 3:30 alarm: rehearse two or three long runs with an early wake-up, a small breakfast and a 5:30 start, so your stomach and legs are ready.

Humidity is the main challenge, so practise drinking a little at frequent stations and train some runs in warm, muggy conditions; check the cut-offs (km 24 at 3:24:59) against your planned pace if you expect to run over 5 hours.

    Taper

Tapering for the Maratona de Pomerode

Start the taper two to three weeks before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. How long should I train for the Maratona de Pomerode?
