Course
The Maratona do Vinho course
Every distance starts and finishes at the Centro Esportivo Darvin João Geremia in Bento Gonçalves, in the Serra Gaúcha. The marathon is a grand tour of wine country through the Vale dos Vinhedos, Monte Belo do Sul and the Estrada do Sabor in Garibaldi, past vineyards, wineries and rural valleys.

On the 2026 course it climbed a cumulative 1,072 m, the half marathon (21.04 km) about 497 m and the 7 km Corrida do Vinho only 83 m, so the two long races are genuinely hilly. Seven Vino Stops at wineries double as aid stations with regional food, music and dancing, backed by eight extra water points. The marathon starts at 6:00 and the half at 7:00, and the top five finishers take home their body weight in wine.

- Weather on race day
- Late January is high summer in the Serra Gaúcha: Bento Gonçalves (about 690 m above sea level) averages lows near 17 °C and highs near 28 °C, with humid air and frequent afternoon showers. The dawn starts give cool early kilometres, but the second half of the marathon usually runs in warm sun, so drink at every point and respect the 7-hour limit.
What to train for
With more than 1,000 m of climbing, hill strength decides this marathon: run weekly hill repeats of 2 to 4 minutes and take your long runs onto rolling roads, building to 30–32 km with 600 to 800 m of climbing.
Practise running downhill relaxed with short, quick steps, because the descents load the quads as much as the climbs.
From December, do one session a week in the heat of the day and rehearse your fuelling, since the final kilometres come in summer warmth. Enjoy the Vino Stops, but build your race nutrition around water, carbohydrate and salt.
