Course
The Salvador Marathon course
Salvador's marathon is a seafront race on the Atlantic orla, run over a September weekend with the 5K and 10K on Saturday and the half and full marathon at dawn on Sunday (the 2026 marathon started at 4:30 a.m.). Recent editions have followed the coastal avenues between the Farol da Barra and the Sereia de Itapuã, with the sea beside you for most of the distance.

In 2026 the start, finish and race village moved to the Centro de Convenções Salvador, on the Boca do Rio seafront, while the usual venue, Arena O Canto da Cidade, is rebuilt. The orla is mostly gentle, but the road rises and falls around the headlands and runners point to a few tougher stretches. It is a World Athletics certified course that now draws runners from all 27 Brazilian states.

- Weather on race day
- September mornings in Salvador usually start around 21–24 °C and rise toward 28 °C, with humidity around 80% and a steady sea breeze. Showers are possible, and the sun is strong as soon as it clears the horizon. Runners called the 2026 edition hot and demanding, so start conservatively and drink at every station.
What to train for
Heat and humidity set the ceiling here more than the course does.
Do your long runs early but in the warmest conditions available to you, and practise drinking 400–600 ml per hour with electrolytes so it is routine by race day.
Add a weekly session of short rolling hills (8–10 x 60–90 seconds) for the rises around the headlands, and run a few sessions before dawn so a 4:30 a.m. start and an early breakfast feel normal.

Taper
Tapering for the Salvador Marathon
Start the taper two to three weeks before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course rolls, so keep one short session on undulating ground in the first taper week.
