Course
The Brasília Marathon course
Run every April around the 21st, Brasília's birthday, with the marathon on the holiday itself and the shorter races in the days before. The start is beside the Museu Nacional and Museu da República at the top of the Esplanada dos Ministérios, and the route is a tour of the capital's landmarks: the Metropolitan Cathedral, the ministries, the National Congress and the Praça dos Três Poderes, with recent editions also using the Eixo Monumental, the Eixão and the Ponte JK over Lake Paranoá.

The roads are wide avenues closed to traffic, with long, gentle gradients rather than steep hills. The Esplanada falls gently toward the Congress, so heading back toward the museums means a gradual climb late in the race, the part runners talk about most. The city sits above 1,000 m, which adds a little effort for anyone coming from sea level.

- Weather on race day
- April marks the end of the rainy season in Brasília: mornings usually start around 17–20 °C and warm toward 27 °C, with humidity near 70% and a chance of showers. The high-altitude sun gets strong soon after sunrise and the avenues offer little shade, so use the early start, wear sunscreen and drink at every station.
What to train for
Long, gentle gradients reward strength more than raw speed: add a weekly session of 6–8 x 3 minutes up a gradual hill, and finish some long runs with 3–4 km of steady uphill or rising effort to rehearse the late climb back toward the museums.
Do part of your long runs in late-morning sun to learn your sweat rate and fuelling needs.
If you live near sea level, expect easy pace to feel a little harder for the first days in the city and set a goal pace that allows for it.

- Thursday Key session
- Goal-pace run, 16 km with 10 km at race pace
- Friday
- Recovery run, 6 km, or cross-train
- Saturday Key session
- Long run, 26–29 km, the last 6 km at race pace
- Sunday
- Easy run, 6 km, then 6 relaxed strides
Taper
Tapering for the Brasília Marathon
Start the taper two to three weeks before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course rolls, so keep one short session on undulating ground in the first taper week.
