    Course

    The Barranquilla Marathon course

The Barranquilla Marathon offers 42K, 21K, 10K and 5K races, and registration for the 2027 edition is already open; it is usually held on a Sunday in mid-March. The route also passed through the Barrio Abajo and El Prado neighborhoods and several main avenues. The course holds World Athletics and AIMS certification, and in 2026 the starts were staggered very early: 4:15 a.m. for the marathon, 5:15 a.m. for the half, 5:30 a.m. for the 10K and 5:45 a.m. for the 5K.

    Weather on race day
March in Barranquilla is hot and humid, with average highs near 31 °C and lows near 25 °C, and muggy conditions almost every day. Rain is very unlikely, at about a 2% chance of a wet day, but the wind is strong, averaging about 23–24 km/h, mostly from the north. Start conservatively in the dark, drink at every aid station and use the breeze to stay cool rather than fighting it.

    What to train for

Barranquilla is hot, humid and windy, so the most useful preparation is heat: do some long runs in warm conditions and practice drinking and taking fuel on the move.

The very early start means a pre-dawn wake-up, so rehearse eating and running at that hour on a few long-run days.

Build marathon long runs to 30 to 32 km, or 16 to 20 km for the half, and include steady stretches at goal pace while holding effort into a headwind for 10 to 15 minutes, as you may face along the river and the coast. Keep the early miles easy and let the cooler hours carry you.
