Course
The Leon's Triathlon course
Everything happens at Wolf Lake Park in Hammond, about 20 to 30 minutes from downtown Chicago, with transition beside the Wolf Lake Pavilion. The swim is an in-water start from the dock behind the pavilion, with buoys about every 100 meters: the Olympic swims a 1,500 meter rectangle southwest to the boat launch near transition, and the sprint swims a 500 meter version of the same course.

The bike is closed to traffic on newly paved roads south and east of the park, an 11.6 mile loop that the sprint rides once and the Olympic twice for 23.2 miles, described by the organizers as extremely flat. The run is an out-and-back on the Wolf Lake pedestrian trail across the boardwalk near the Illiana Yacht Club, lined with more than 1,000 American flags: 5 km for the sprint and 10 km for the Olympic, which continues to 112th Street. Leon's has been held in Northwest Indiana since 1983 and hosts the USA Triathlon Military and First Responders National Championships.

- Race-day conditions
- Early June in Hammond averages a high of 81 °F and a low of 61 °F, and the waves start from 8:00 a.m. CDT, so the swim and bike usually come before the warmest part of the day. The organizers list Wolf Lake at about 69 °F. June brings rain on about 14 days and around 4.6 inches in total, often as passing showers, so be ready for a wet road. Humidity averages about 65 percent, so drink steadily on the bike and use every aid station on the run.
What to train for
A flat, closed bike course rewards steady power, so build sustained efforts on the bike: 2 to 3 blocks of 10 to 20 minutes at Olympic effort in an aero position you can hold.
No drafting is allowed, so practice riding your own pace.
Practice in-water starts and sighting on buoys in open water, since the swim begins from the dock. Add a weekly brick of 45 to 60 minutes on the bike straight into 15 to 20 minutes at goal run pace, because the flat trail invites a fast run. Aid stations with water and Gatorade Endurance sit about every mile, so train with the same drink.

Your build to race day
Taper
Tapering for the Leon's Triathlon
Start the taper seven to ten days before race day. Trim the volume in all three sports, keep short race-pace efforts in each, and do one last short brick so running off the bike still feels familiar. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on June 6, 2027, your taper starts around May 28, 2027.
