The Knoxville Marathon course
A tour of Knoxville that starts downtown and runs the University of Tennessee campus, the Third Creek Greenway, Sequoyah Hills, and the Tennessee River waterfront before finishing at World's Fair Park. The race finished inside Neyland Stadium until 2019 and is still remembered for it, but stadium renovations moved the finish and it has stayed moved. The middle of the course is what people remember now: Sequoyah Hills and the stretch back toward campus are steadily rolling, and the marathon adds a second, quieter loop where the hills feel considerably longer.
Weather on race day
Early April in East Tennessee is genuinely unpredictable. A start in the high 30s that warms into the 60s is typical, but cold rain is common enough that most veterans pack for it.
What to train for
Sustained rolling terrain rather than repeats. The course never gives you a long flat stretch to settle into, so the skill is holding effort steady while pace moves around underneath it. Run your long runs on the hilliest route you have access to and practise drinking on a climb.
