Course
The Aix-en-Provence 70.3 course
The 1.9 km swim is a rectangular course in the Lac de Peyrolles, about 20 km from Aix-en-Provence, with a rolling start that sends six athletes off every seven seconds. The point-to-point 90 km bike climbs about 1,180 m from Peyrolles-en-Provence through Saint-Paul-lez-Durance, Ginasservis, Rians and Pourrières, then crosses the Col du Cengle (486 m, around km 70) on the technical roads beneath Mont Sainte-Victoire before dropping through Le Tholonet into Aix.

T2 sits in the courtyard of a historic school in the city centre. The 21.1 km run is three loops through the heart of Aix, its parks and around the La Rotonde fountain, finishing on the Cours Mirabeau.

- Race-day conditions
- IRONMAN lists an average water temperature of 18 °C, with readings of 17–19 °C in 2024–2026, so expect a wetsuit swim (allowed up to and including 24.5 °C). Late May in Provence usually starts cool, around 14 °C at the lake, and warms to the low or mid-20s °C by the run, with strong sun on the city loops.
What to train for
Train for a long, steady bike: sustained sweet-spot efforts of 20–40 minutes on rolling roads, plus a specific climb of 10–15 minutes late in long rides to rehearse the Col du Cengle after 65 km.
Practise technical descending, because the drop to Le Tholonet and Aix comes on twisting roads.
Get comfortable in cool open water in a wetsuit, and do bricks with short sharp rises so the three-loop rolling run through the city feels familiar.

Taper
Tapering for the Aix-en-Provence 70.3
Start the taper ten to fourteen days before race day. Trim the volume in all three sports, keep short race-pace efforts in each, and do one last short brick so running off the bike still feels familiar. The course is hilly, so keep one short hill session in the first taper week to keep the climbs familiar. With the race on May 23, 2027, your taper starts around May 11, 2027.
