    Course

    The Great Manchester Run course

Both races start on Portland Street near Oxford Street in the city centre and finish at the bottom of Deansgate. Half marathon runners peel off onto the Mancunian Way to pass the Etihad Stadium, then rejoin the shared route on Chester Road towards Old Trafford.

Both courses then run through Salford Quays, past the Imperial War Museum North and Coronation Street's famous Rovers Return, before heading back into the city. The half begins with a gentle incline and finishes with some downhill running, while the 10K has a little downhill near the start and a short incline towards the end. It is a big-city party, with music and entertainment zones throughout.

    10K, Half marathon
    Weather on race day
Late May in Manchester is usually mild, around 10–17 °C, with the half starting at 8:00 and the 10K at 11:45, when it can be noticeably warmer. Showers are always possible; for the later 10K start, drink well through the morning and ease your pace if the sun is out.

    What to train for

For the half, the opening incline invites a cautious first kilometre, so hold back and let the downhill finish pay you back; long runs of 18–22 km with the last 5 km at goal pace are the core.

For the 10K, the key sessions are intervals such as 5 × 1 km or 3 × 2 km at 10K pace, plus a weekly tempo run.

Both courses reward a strong finish, so end some runs with a short rise followed by a fast downhill stretch. If you are running the 10K, rehearse a late-morning race routine, because breakfast timing and fuelling matter with an 11:45 start.

    Taper

Tapering for the Great Manchester Run

Start the taper ten to fourteen days before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on May 23, 2027, your taper starts around May 11, 2027.
