Course
The Grande Corrida de Ano Novo course
Start and finish are in Praça do Comércio, Lisbon's riverside square, with the 10 km going off at 10:00 and the 5 km at 10:05. The 10 km runs up through the Baixa via Rua da Prata and Praça da Figueira, loops Martim Moniz, passes the Rossio and turns at the top of Restauradores before climbing Rua do Carmo and Rua Garrett into the Chiado.

From the Chiado it drops back down via Calçada de São Francisco to the riverfront, out along Avenida Infante D. Henrique to a turnaround at Cais da Lingueta, and then makes a second pass through the Rossio and Restauradores before finishing in the square. Most of the race is flat on the Baixa grid and the riverside, but the Chiado climb and the steep descent that follows are the defining moments, and some streets are paved with cobbles.

- Weather on race day
- Mid-January in Lisbon is usually cool and fresh at a 10:00 start, around 11–14 °C, with a fair chance of showers and a breeze off the Tejo along the riverfront. Conditions are good for a fast 10 km: start in a light layer you can drop and save something for the open riverside stretch if the wind is up.
What to train for
Prepare for one sharp climb and one steep descent: add weekly hill repeats of 60 to 90 seconds and practise running downhill relaxed with quick, short steps.
A 10 km rewards speed endurance, so build sessions like 5 × 1 km or 3 × 2 km at goal pace with short recoveries.
On race day, ease up the Chiado rather than racing it, then use the descent and the flat riverfront to get back on pace.
