The Eugene Marathon course
Track Town's race, starting on Agate Street in the shadow of Hayward Field and finishing on the track inside it. The first ten miles are shared with the half through the university neighbourhoods; the second half runs almost entirely on the Ruth Bascom Riverbank Path along the Willamette, which is car-free and close to flat. Total elevation gain is under 600 feet.
Weather on race day
Late April in Eugene is cool and often wet: starts in the 40s, highs in the 50s or 60s, and a fair chance of rain at some point during the morning. Conditions are usually well suited to a fast time.
What to train for
Goal-pace volume. On a flat course with good weather, the marathon becomes a straightforward test of aerobic fitness and pacing judgment, so long runs with extended blocks at target pace are the core session. Rehearse fuelling precisely, because there will be no terrain excuse for a bad last 10K.
