    Course

    The Oro Valley Triathlon course

Cal Tri Oro Valley is based at the Oro Valley Aquatic Center at the foot of the Santa Catalina Mountains, about 2,600 feet above sea level. The swim is in the center's competition pool (set long course with a serpentine route in past editions): 750 m for the Intermediate and 350 m for the Sprint, with seeded starts at 8:00 a.m. for the Sprint and 8:20 a.m. for the Intermediate.

The bike repeats a loop on Calle Concordia, La Cañada Drive, Lambert Lane and Oracle Road, with 21.7 miles and about 890 feet of climbing for the Intermediate and 14.5 miles and about 590 feet for the Sprint. The run covers 4.7 miles (Intermediate) or 3.1 miles (Sprint) on roads around the center, with gentle rollers of roughly 160 to 245 feet in total. The bike cutoff is 10:30 a.m. and the finish closes at noon.

    Race-day conditions
The race lists average March temperatures of about 75 °F for the high and 48 °F for the low, so expect a crisp start around 50 °F and a warm, sunny finish. Desert air is very dry and you lose fluid without noticing, so carry enough to drink every 15 minutes on the bike and wear sunscreen. The swim is in an outdoor pool; the race does not publish a water temperature, so check the athlete guide for wetsuit rules.

    What to train for

The bike decides this race: practice holding steady power on 3 to 6 minute rises, for example 4 x 8 minutes at race effort on a rolling route, seated and smooth on the climbs.

Do bricks of 60 to 75 minutes on the bike straight into 20 to 30 minutes of running so the rolling run feels familiar.

In the pool, practice sharing a lane, passing and ducking under lane lines at the ends. At about 2,600 feet in dry air, your effort will feel a little higher than at sea level, so pace the first half of the bike by feel and drink on a schedule.

    Taper

Tapering for the Oro Valley Triathlon

Start the taper seven to ten days before race day. Trim the volume in all three sports, keep short race-pace efforts in each, and do one last short brick so running off the bike still feels familiar. The course rolls, so keep one short session on undulating ground in the first taper week. With the race on March 13, 2027, your taper starts around March 4, 2027.
