Course
The Basildon Half Marathon course
Both races start and finish at Basildon Sporting Village on Cranes Farm Road (SS14 3GR), with the half marathon off at 9:00 and the 10K at 9:30. Neither course is lapped: the route heads out on closed roads through the town and into the surrounding countryside before returning to the Sporting Village.

The organisers describe a mix of urban and country roads with gentle undulations throughout, and the 10K route file shows about 50 m of climbing. Pacers are part of the entry, water comes roughly every 5 km, and there are toilets about halfway. The half has a 3-hour cut-off (12:00) because of road closure timings.

- Half marathon, 10K
- Weather on race day
- Mid September in south Essex is usually mild and one of the drier spots in the UK: around 13–17 °C at the 9:00 start, with highs near 19 °C on Met Office averages for nearby Shoeburyness. Mornings are often bright, and an open country road can bring a breeze. Conditions favour a steady, even-paced run, so drink at each water station even on a cool morning.
What to train for
Closed roads, gentle undulations and pacers make this a good half for a measured personal best.
Build long runs to 18 to 20 km on rolling roads, with the last 5 to 6 km at goal pace.
Once a week run 2 x 5 km or 3 x 4 km at half marathon pace, keeping effort steady over each rise rather than chasing the watch. On race day, settle behind the pacer for your goal time for the first 10 km and only push on in the final 5.

Taper
Tapering for the Basildon Half Marathon
Start the taper ten to fourteen days before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course rolls, so keep one short session on undulating ground in the first taper week. With the race on September 12, 2027, your taper starts around August 31, 2027.
