    Course

    The Tri Santa Cruz course

Race central is Depot Park, where transition and the finish sit, and every swim starts on the west side of the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf in the sheltered water off Cowell Beach. The International swims two clockwise loops (1,600 yards) and the Sprint one (800 yards); after the beach exit you run up the boardwalk path and a trail to Depot Park, and that run counts in your swim split.

The bike is fully closed to traffic: 6-mile loops through the West Cliff Drive neighborhood (closures cover West Cliff, Bay Street, Lighthouse Avenue, Cowell Street and Swanton Boulevard), four for the International (24 miles), two for the Sprint (12 miles). The run heads west along Beach Street and out West Cliff Drive past the lighthouse and Steamer Lane: a single 3.05-mile out-and-back to Columbia Street for the Sprint, two laps totalling 5.7 miles for the International. Looping courses make it fast and easy for spectators, with waves from 8:00 a.m. for the International and 8:30 a.m. for the Sprint.

    Race-day conditions
Monterey Bay usually sits around 58–64 °F in August, so plan on a wetsuit (legal under USA Triathlon rules at 78 °F and below). The organizers describe race weekend as fog-free with calm water in the protected bay; Santa Cruz in August averages lows near 55 °F and highs in the mid 70s °F, so expect a cool swim start and comfortable racing temperatures. Bring a layer for the wait at the wharf.

    What to train for

The swim is the one leg that can surprise you: get at least four or five ocean or open-water sessions in your wetsuit, practising sighting off buoys, swimming through small swells and running up a beach straight after.

The bike is flat, closed-road loops with plenty of turns, so build sustained power with 3 x 10 minutes at race effort and practice braking late and accelerating cleanly out of corners.

Do weekly bricks of 30 to 45 minutes on the bike into 15 to 20 minutes at goal run pace, because the coastal run rewards anyone who can settle quickly. Rehearse your transition with the long swim exit in mind: wetsuit half off as you climb to Depot Park.

    Taper

Tapering for the Tri Santa Cruz

Start the taper seven to ten days before race day. Trim the volume in all three sports, keep short race-pace efforts in each, and do one last short brick so running off the bike still feels familiar. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on August 8, 2027, your taper starts around July 30, 2027.

How long should I train for the Tri Santa Cruz?

Most athletes give a Olympic-distance triathlon twelve to sixteen weeks of focused training on top of an existing base. The coach counts back from your actual race date, so if you have less time than that it builds the best plan the remaining weeks allow rather than pretending you have longer.
