Course
The Timbuk Winter Run Challenge course
The Timbuk Winter Run Challenge starts and finishes at the Timbuk Farms Garden Center in Granville. The course is a 6.83 mile loop on local roads, some paved and some gravel (all probably frozen, as the organiser puts it), and through a Christmas tree farm.

The 22K runs that loop twice for 13.67 miles, the 11K runs it once, and the 5K has its own course. Expect hills throughout the loop, which means 22K runners meet every climb twice. The 22K and 11K start together at 1:00 p.m., the 5K at 1:15 p.m., and the course closes at 4:00 p.m., giving the 22K three hours; afterwards everyone warms up in the greenhouse with soup and hot chocolate.

- Weather on race day
- Late February around Granville usually brings afternoon temperatures in the low 30s to low 40s °F, and conditions swing from dry and mild to wind, snow or sleet. The 1:00 p.m. start catches the warmest part of the day, but frozen gravel and open farm roads can be slick and breezy, so dress in layers and adjust your pace to the footing.
What to train for
This is a hilly half marathon and a bit more on mixed surfaces in February, so strength on climbs and sure footing matter more than flat pace.
Run a weekly hill session, for example 6 to 10 x 90 seconds uphill at a strong effort with a jog down, and do part of your long run on gravel or dirt whenever you can.
Build the long run to 12 to 14 miles on rolling roads by late January, running by effort rather than pace on the hills, and on a few of them repeat the same hilly loop twice to rehearse lap two. With a 1:00 p.m. start, practise your race-day lunch timing on long runs and take fuel at about 45 minutes in.

Tapering for the Timbuk Winter Run Challenge
Start the taper ten to fourteen days before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp.
