Course
The Southampton Running Festival course
All races start and finish on Southampton Common, with the event village off The Avenue (SO15 7NN), a short walk from the city centre. The lapped route winds through the Common's woodland, grassland, ponds, wetlands and open parkland, a Site of Special Scientific Interest that feels far from the city.

The published route files show about 155 m of climbing over the half marathon, 76 m on the 10K and only 20 m on the 5K, so the longer loops roll gently rather than climb. Starts are staggered: half marathon at 9:30, 10K at 10:00 and 5K at 10:05, with a 3-hour cut-off for the half. Water is provided on every lap, and the toilets in the village are easy to reach from the route.

- Weather on race day
- Southampton in early August is usually warm and fairly dry: around 15–19 °C at the 9:30 start, with afternoon highs in the low 20s °C on Met Office averages for the nearby south coast. Sunny mornings warm up quickly, so the later finishers in the half will feel the heat most. Start a little conservatively, drink on every lap and wear a cap and sun cream.
What to train for
The Common's paths are mostly gentle with short rises, so the race rewards steady rhythm and a good second half.
Build to long runs of 18 to 20 km on park paths, finishing the last 4 to 5 km at goal pace.
Once a week run 6 to 8 x 1 km at 10K to half marathon pace on a rolling loop, holding effort steady over the rises. Since it is a summer race, do some of your long runs mid-morning to rehearse drinking and pacing in warmer conditions.

Taper
Tapering for the Southampton Running Festival
Start the taper ten to fourteen days before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course rolls, so keep one short session on undulating ground in the first taper week. With the race on August 8, 2027, your taper starts around July 27, 2027.
