Course
The Shamrock Shuffle course
Chicago's spring season opener is an 8K that starts and finishes in Grant Park and loops through the heart of downtown, sharing streets and atmosphere with the Chicago Marathon. Recent editions have run north on Columbus Drive to Grand Avenue, through the Loop on State Street, Wacker Drive and Jackson Boulevard, then south and back along Michigan Avenue.

The only real rise is the short climb on Roosevelt Road near the end before the turn onto Columbus Drive and the Grant Park finish. It is fast and flat, with mile markers every mile, two aid stations and a 15-minute-per-mile pace requirement. Tall buildings in the Loop can throw off GPS, so trust the mile markers.

- Distances
- 5 miles
- Field
- More than 20,000 participants
- Weather on race day
- Late March mornings in Chicago are usually in the 30s to 40s °F, often with wind off the lake and sometimes rain or even snow. Wear a throwaway layer at the start and expect the wind to change direction several times around the loop.
What to train for
An 8K is raced at roughly 10K effort or slightly faster, so the key sessions are intervals such as 5 to 6 times 0.6 mile at 8K pace with short recovery, plus a weekly tempo of 20 to 25 minutes.
Practise starting relaxed in a crowded corral and building over the first mile.
Save something for Roosevelt Road: rehearse a short uphill surge at the end of tempo runs, then a strong finish on the flat.

Your build to race day
Taper
Tapering for the Shamrock Shuffle
Start the taper seven to ten days before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on March 21, 2027, your taper starts around March 12, 2027.
