Course
The Shamrock'n Half course
Both weekend races start and finish at Sutter Health Park, the riverside ballpark across the Sacramento River in West Sacramento, and the half ends on the stadium's warning track. The half crosses the gold Tower Bridge into Old Sacramento, heads south through the Land Park neighborhoods to a loop around the Land Park golf course near mile 6, then returns north on the Sacramento River bike trail past Miller Park.

Around mile 12 it runs up Capitol Mall toward the State Capitol before recrossing the Tower Bridge to the ballpark. The course is essentially flat, with the bridge approaches as the only real rises, and aid stations about every 2 miles serve water, plus Tailwind on the half. The 5K and 10K on Saturday use certified courses from the same stadium.
- Terrain
- Flat
- Distances
- 5K, 10K, Half marathon
- Field
- More than 5,000 participants across the weekend
- Weather on race day
- Mid-March in Sacramento is usually mild: temperatures for the 7:45 a.m. waves are typically in the mid 40s to low 50s °F, warming into the 60s by late morning. Spring showers are possible and the river trail can be breezy, but conditions are often ideal for a fast half, so dress for the start and plan to shed a layer.
What to train for
A flat course with long, straight riverside stretches is built for even pacing and personal bests.
Make tempo runs your key session (3 to 6 miles at half-marathon pace or slightly faster) and finish long runs with 2 to 3 miles at goal pace to rehearse the Capitol Mall return.
Pacers run from 1:25 to 2:30, so pick a group that matches your goal and practice that exact pace. If you are running the Double Header, treat Saturday's race as a comfortable shakeout and save your real effort for Sunday.

Your build to race day
Taper
Tapering for the Shamrock'n Half
Start the taper ten to fourteen days before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on March 14, 2027, your taper starts around March 2, 2027.

Shamrock'n Half training questions
How long should I train for the Shamrock'n Half?
Most runners give a half marathon twelve to sixteen weeks of focused training on top of an existing base. The plan above counts back from your actual race date, so if you have less time than that it builds the best plan the remaining weeks allow rather than pretending you have longer.
