Course
The Run Ocean Isle Beach course
Run Ocean Isle Beach starts and finishes in a shopping center on the mainland side of Ocean Isle Beach, on the southeastern North Carolina coast. The half marathon and 10K head out on Hale Beach Road and Culpepper Road to Causeway Drive and onto the island, where the half tours most of the island with oceanfront views before returning to the mainland.

The 5K stays on the mainland streets around the start. The half and 10K start at 7:00 a.m., and part of each course stays open to vehicles, so follow the signs, volunteers and officers. Finishers earn the series' famously oversized medals: 6 inches for the half, 5 for the 10K and 4 for the 5K.
- Distances
- Half marathon, 10K, 5K
- Weather on race day
- Late October on this stretch of coast is usually pleasant: the organizers cite an average high of 75 °F and low of 56 °F. Expect upper 50s to mid 60s °F at the 7:00 a.m. start, with warmth and sun building through the morning, so start well hydrated and keep the first miles relaxed.
What to train for
For the half, build long runs to 10 to 12 miles with the last 3 to 4 at goal pace, and add a weekly tempo run of 3 to 5 miles at about half marathon effort.
Finish two easy runs a week with 4 to 6 relaxed strides to keep your legs quick.
Since mornings can still be warm and humid, do some runs in similar conditions and practice drinking on the move. If you are racing the 10K or 5K instead, keep the long run at 6 to 8 miles and add short intervals such as 6 x half a mile at 5K to 10K effort.
