Course
The Run Melbourne course
A one-lap, AIMS-certified 21.1 km on fully closed roads, starting on Batman Avenue beside the Yarra and finishing inside Melbourne Park. The opening kilometres head east along Flinders Street and through Fitzroy Gardens, then the course passes Flinders Street Station and follows the river west to Docklands, crossing Webb Bridge and looping South Wharf and Alexandra Gardens.

The second half runs St Kilda Road and the Tan, past the Shrine of Remembrance and around Government House, before returning along the Yarra past Birrarung Marr and over Tanderrum Bridge. No elevation figure is published: it is mostly river and boulevard running, with short rises around Fitzroy Gardens and the Domain near the Shrine. The half starts at 6:30 am, so the first kilometres are run in the winter pre-dawn dark.

- Field
- More than 28,000 runners across all distances
- Weather on race day
- Mid-July in Melbourne is usually cold at the 6:30 am start, typically 5–9 °C, with daytime highs around 13–14 °C. Drizzle is common in winter (about ten wet days in July), so start in a throwaway layer and gloves you can drop. Once you are warm, cool air is ideal for holding goal pace.
What to train for
This course is about even pacing, not hills, so the key sessions are tempo runs and long intervals at half marathon pace (for example 3 x 5 km with 2 minutes easy).
Include a couple of short rises in your long runs so the climbs around Fitzroy Gardens and the Shrine do not break your rhythm.
Build the long run to 18–22 km with the last few kilometres at goal pace. Do two or three early, dark, cold runs in race kit to rehearse your warm-up and layering.

Your build to race day
Taper
Tapering for the Run Melbourne
Start the taper ten to fourteen days before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on July 18, 2027, your taper starts around July 6, 2027.
