Course
The Run Aintree course
Run Aintree takes place inside Aintree Racecourse in north Liverpool, home of the Grand National, with the event village, start and finish by the grandstands. The races are flat and fast: the half marathon is an out-and-back section followed by 4 laps of the racecourse circuit, the 10K is 2 laps and the 5K a single lap.

Climbing is small, around 80 m for the half, about 38 m for the 10K and 19 m for the 5K, spread over gentle rises around the circuit. The surface is mainly tarmac, with one section of trail path through the middle of the racecourse and a few narrow stretches where you keep to the outside unless overtaking. Water comes roughly every 5 km on the half and 10K, and you pass toilets in the grandstands at the end of every lap.

- Weather on race day
- At the end of October, Liverpool usually sees 9–13 °C around the 10:00 start, with highs near 14 °C on the Met Office's nearby Crosby record. The open racecourse catches wind off the Irish Sea and showers are common, so dress for the wind, tuck in behind other runners on exposed stretches and expect your splits to vary with the breeze on each lap.
What to train for
A flat lapped course rewards even effort and the ability to hold rhythm when the wind changes direction each lap.
Make your key session 3 x 3 km at half marathon pace (or 5 x 1 km at 10K pace for the shorter races) on a loop route, keeping effort steady rather than forcing exact splits into a headwind.
Do a few runs on mixed tarmac and firm trail so the off-road section through the centre does not break your stride. Half marathoners should build the long run to 18–20 km and run the last 5 km at goal pace.

Your build to race day
Taper
Tapering for the Run Aintree
Start the taper ten to fourteen days before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on October 31, 2027, your taper starts around October 19, 2027.
