    Course

    The OCNJ Half Marathon course

All three races start at the base of the boardwalk at 9th Street, beside the historic Ocean City Music Pier, and finish on the boardwalk at the Music Pier. The USATF-certified half marathon runs on the city's streets, including an out-and-back over the Ocean City–Longport Bridge, then climbs onto the boardwalk near mile 6 for a roped runners' lane south past the Music Pier to the end of the boards at 23rd Street near mile 8.5.

From there it drops back to the street for a final out-and-back with a turnaround near mile 10, returns to the boardwalk at mile 11.5 and finishes at the Music Pier. The non-competitive 10-miler follows the half course to the 23rd Street turnaround and heads straight back, and the 5K runs south on the boardwalk to 23rd Street and back. The bridge is the only real rise on a fast, flat course, and the boardwalk stays open to walkers, bikes and surreys, so expect to share it.

    Distances
    Half marathon, 10 miles, 5K
    Weather on race day
Around early October, NOAA 1991–2020 normals for nearby Margate usually run from lows of about 56–58 °F to highs of about 71–73 °F, so the morning start is mild. The course includes the open boardwalk and an out-and-back over the Longport Bridge, so on a windy day run the headwind leg by effort and take the time back with the wind behind you.

    What to train for

This is a personal-best course, so the work is holding an even goal pace on flat ground.

Build to 10 to 12 mile long runs with the final 3 to 4 miles at half marathon pace, and run a weekly tempo of 20 to 30 minutes at threshold.

Add 6 to 8 x 45 seconds of hill or bridge repeats so the Longport Bridge feels like a small bump, and rehearse tight 180-degree turnarounds by running out-and-back segments in workouts. Half marathoners must hold a 15-minute-per-mile pace, so run-walkers should practice that pace on their long runs.

    Taper

Tapering for the OCNJ Half Marathon

Start the taper ten to fourteen days before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on October 3, 2027, your taper starts around September 21, 2027.

    OCNJ Half Marathon training questions

How long should I train for the OCNJ Half Marathon?

Most runners give a half marathon twelve to sixteen weeks of focused training on top of an existing base. The plan above counts back from your actual race date, so if you have less time than that it builds the best plan the remaining weeks allow rather than pretending you have longer.

Is the OCNJ Half Marathon course hilly?

Flat. All three races start at the base of the boardwalk at 9th Street, beside the historic Ocean City Music Pier, and finish on the boardwalk at the Music Pier.

What is the weather usually like at the OCNJ Half Marathon?

Around early October, NOAA 1991–2020 normals for nearby Margate usually run from lows of about 56–58 °F to highs of about 71–73 °F, so the morning start is mild. The course includes the open boardwalk and an out-and-back over the Longport Bridge, so on a windy day run the headwind leg by effort and take the time back with the wind behind you.

When should I start tapering for the OCNJ Half Marathon?

Start the taper ten to fourteen days before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on October 3, 2027, your taper starts around September 21, 2027.

Do I need an account to get a OCNJ Half Marathon training plan?

No. The plan above builds in your browser with no account, no email, and no card. Make a free account only if you want to keep it, log your runs against it, and have the coach keep adapting it as your training goes.
