Course
The April Fools Half Marathon course
Both races start and finish together on the Atlantic City Boardwalk, and the half marathon puts more than 8 of its 13.1 miles on the boards beside the ocean. The rest runs on the streets just behind the beach, with aid stations on Pacific and Atlantic Avenues and at New Haven Avenue in Ventnor, where the course meets the base of the Boardwalk.

There are no real climbs on this sea-level course, and both distances are USATF certified. The wooden planks give a little underfoot, and the open beachfront makes the wind off the water the main variable. Costume awards and a free beer or seltzer at the finish for runners 21 and over keep the April Fools spirit alive.

- Flat
- Distances
- Half marathon, 5 miles
- Weather on race day
- Mid-April in Atlantic City usually brings race mornings from the mid-40s to the mid-50s °F, with the ocean keeping the shore cooler than inland towns. A breeze off the water is common, so expect a headwind on at least one stretch of the Boardwalk. Cool air is great for pacing: start in a layer you can toss.
What to train for
Flat and fast rewards steady goal-pace running, so build tempo runs of 4 to 6 miles at half marathon effort and a long run that finishes with 3 miles at race pace.
On a breezy day, practice holding effort rather than pace into the wind; tucking in behind a group on the Boardwalk saves real energy.
Keep your calves and hips strong with strides and short hill reps, because a flat course loads the same muscles mile after mile.

Taper
Tapering for the April Fools Half Marathon
Start the taper ten to fourteen days before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on April 11, 2027, your taper starts around March 30, 2027.
