    Course

    The Oakland Marathon course

The marathon starts at 7 a.m. on Lake Merritt Boulevard in front of the Henry J. Kaiser Center for the Arts and finishes in the same place, as one big loop through the city.

    Read the full course notes

Miles 1–5 run through Little Saigon, around the east side of Lake Merritt and along Grand Avenue past the Grand Lake Theater into the Piedmont Avenue neighborhood, and miles 6–10 cross downtown and Telegraph Avenue past the Fox Theater before circling the lake's north and west banks. The signature section is miles 11–20, an out-and-back on the Bay Bridge to Yerba Buena Island, with a long, gradual rise onto the span and wide views across the bay. Coming off the bridge, the final 10K is downhill and then flat past Jack London Square back to the Kaiser Center. The half shares the first 10 miles and skips the bridge, while the 10K loops Lake Merritt and downtown.

    Weather on race day
Oakland in late March usually starts cool and mild, around 48–55°F at the 7 a.m. start and seldom above the mid-60s by the finish. Spring showers are possible (March averages about 10 wet days), and the bridge is exposed, so expect wind out over the water. Bring a throwaway layer and plan your fueling for the long bridge stretch.

    What to train for

The bridge out-and-back is where this race is won or lost: a long, exposed, gently climbing stretch in the middle of the marathon.

Do a weekly run with 20–30 minutes of steady climbing on a long, gradual grade, and practise holding effort rather than pace into a headwind.

Make your key long runs 18–20 miles with the last 4–6 at goal pace, because the downhill final 10K rewards anyone with legs left to use it. Add downhill strides so the drop off the bridge feels fast rather than punishing.

    Tapering for the Oakland Marathon

Start the taper two to three weeks before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course rolls, so keep one short session on undulating ground in the first taper week. With the race on March 21, 2027, your taper starts around March 3, 2027.
