Course
The Mohican Trail Run course
The Mohican Trail Run has brought runners to the trails around Loudonville for more than 35 years and is reportedly the fifth oldest ultra in the USA; it hosted the first USATF ultra running championship in 2005. The 2027 race is June 5 and 6, with 100-mile, 50-mile and marathon distances run on 1 to 4 loops through the 5,000-acre Mohican Memorial State Forest.

The surface mixes pavement, dirt road and single track that can be muddy, dusty, rocky or rooted, with aid stations about 5 miles apart and drop bags at the Covered Bridge and Mohican Adventures stations. The start and finish are at the Mohican Adventures pavilion, about a mile from Loudonville on SR 3 South. The 100 has a 32-hour limit and is a Western States lottery qualifier and a UTMB Index race, and more than 700 runners took part in 2026.

- Weather on race day
- Ten years of early June weather data for Loudonville show average highs near 76 °F and lows near 58 °F, with about 62 °F at 8 am and humid mornings. Rain falls on more than one day in three in this window, which is why the trail can turn muddy. Plan for warm afternoons and a cool night for the 100, carry electrolytes and keep dry socks in your drop bags.
What to train for
Runners describe Mohican as hilly, so build climbing into your long runs and practise power hiking the steep pitches at an effort you could hold all day.
Train on technical single track, roots and mud if you can, and do back-to-back long runs on weekends (for example 20 miles Saturday and 12 to 15 miles Sunday for the 100).
Rehearse your aid station routine and night running with a headlamp for the 100-mile. Practise eating every 30 to 45 minutes on long runs, because fueling decides most ultra finishes.

Taper
Tapering for the Mohican Trail Run
Start the taper two to three weeks before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is hilly, so keep one short hill session in the first taper week to keep the climbs familiar. With the race on June 5, 2027, your taper starts around May 18, 2027.
