Course
The Modesto Marathon course
The marathon starts downtown at 1325 11th Street and finishes a block away, heading out through Modesto's historic, tree-lined college neighborhoods and past Modesto Junior College's west campus before reaching open countryside. The long middle section runs among orchards with views of the Diablo Range and the San Joaquin River National Wildlife Refuge before the route turns back toward town.

The organizers describe the course as flat and fast, and it has a long reputation as a Boston qualifier. There are 12 aid stations and the course stays open for 7 hours. The half shares the neighborhoods and orchard roads, the 10K stays in the College neighborhood, and the 5K passes Graceada Park and the Virginia Corridor.

- Flat
- Distances
- Marathon, Half marathon, 10K, 5K
- Weather on race day
- Early April in Modesto is usually ideal at the start, around 47–55°F at 7 a.m., but the Central Valley warms toward the low 70s by early afternoon and the open orchard roads offer little shade. Wind across the valley floor is possible on the exposed rural stretch. Start on pace rather than ahead of it, and drink early so the last 10K is not a fight with the warming day.
What to train for
A flat, fast course lets you run the same rhythm from start to finish, so training is about holding goal pace for a long time.
Make your key sessions long runs of 18–20 miles with the last 6–10 at marathon pace, plus a weekly tempo of 5–8 miles between half marathon and marathon effort.
Practise taking gels and drinks at race pace, because there are no hills that slow you down naturally for them. If Boston is the goal, plan even splits: a flat course punishes a fast first half more than any hill.

Taper
Tapering for the Modesto Marathon
Start the taper two to three weeks before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on April 4, 2027, your taper starts around March 17, 2027.
