Course
The Meia Maratona Douro Verde course
A riverside loop on both banks of the Douro, starting and finishing at Ribadouro (Baião) beside the Douro Royal Valley Hotel & Spa at 10 a.m. You head along the N211 to the Mosteiró bridge, cross to the south bank and follow the CM1022 to the Carrapatelo dam.

There you cross the river again and run back along the north bank, close to the water the whole way, to the same finish. Expect valley roads with gentle undulation rather than big climbs, though the organisers publish no elevation profile. Water stations are at 5, 10 and 15 km and at the finish.
- Distances
- Half marathon
- Weather on race day
- Late March in the Douro valley usually brings 10–17 °C around the 10 a.m. start, often with morning mist on the river that burns off. Spring showers are common, so pack a light layer for the start and expect cooler, damp air near the water.
What to train for
Two bridge crossings and the dam approach mean short rises and descents, so add rolling routes and a few 60 to 90 second hill reps to your week.
Run long runs to 18 to 20 km with the last 5 km at goal pace to rehearse the north-bank return.
Practise drinking from cups at 5 km intervals, since that is the only support on course.
