Course
The Médoc Marathon course
A single loop that starts and finishes on the riverside quays of Pauillac and winds through the vineyards and famous wine estates of the Médoc on a Saturday morning in early September. The organisers describe it as rolling, and about 24% of the distance is on gravel vineyard tracks rather than tarmac.

Fancy dress is the tradition, with a yearly theme, wine tastings at the châteaux and regional food such as oysters and entrecôte along the way. The limit is a generous 6 h 30, enforced by a sweep vehicle, so this is a celebration first and a race second. The field is capped at 8,500 runners.

- Weather on race day
- Early September in the Médoc is usually warm: about 14–18 °C at the 9:30 start, rising to the low or mid-20s °C by early afternoon, often with full sun on exposed vineyard roads. Take the heat seriously, drink water at every stop alongside any wine, and plan for a slower pace in costume.
What to train for
Train to be on your feet for five to six hours, not to run a fast time: long runs and run-walk sessions of 3–4 hours build the endurance that matters here.
Do some of those long runs on gravel paths and rolling country roads, and at least one in your costume to find the chafing before race day.
Practise eating and drinking on the move, since the stops are the point of the day and your stomach needs to cope with them in warm weather.

Your build to race day
Taper
Tapering for the Médoc Marathon
Start the taper two to three weeks before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course rolls, so keep one short session on undulating ground in the first taper week. With the race on September 4, 2027, your taper starts around August 17, 2027.
