    Course

The Marathon du Lac d'Annecy course

The Brooks Marathon du Lac d'Annecy was created in 1980 and is organized by the Annecy Haute-Savoie Athlétisme club. It starts and finishes at Le Pâquier on the lakeshore in Annecy and runs between lake and mountains on roads, bike paths and pedestrian paths, past the old trees of Parc Charles Bosson and the Marais de l'Enfer.

The course is described as relatively flat, with about 100 m of total climbing, and the marathon time limit is 5 hours 30 minutes. The 2026 weekend also offered a half marathon, 10 km, 5 km, a nordic walk and children's races, with more than 10,000 participants each year. The race is held in April, and the exact 2027 date had not been published when we checked, so confirm it on the club's site.

    Weather on race day
Ten years of mid April weather data for Annecy show average highs near 16 °C and lows near 5 °C, with about 7 °C at 8 am. Rain falls on about one day in three in this window, so pack a light rain shell and a throwaway layer for the start. Once you are running, the cool lakeside air is close to ideal for a marathon.

    What to train for

With only about 100 m of climbing, this is a course for steady, even pacing, so build long runs to 30 to 32 km with goal-pace blocks in the second half.

Practise running on mixed surfaces (road and bike path) so your rhythm stays smooth when the path narrows.

An April marathon means your peak weeks fall in March, often in cool and changeable weather, so keep a flexible plan for wet or cold days. Taper over the last two to three weeks and arrive fresh.

Tapering for the Marathon du Lac d'Annecy

Start the taper two to three weeks before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week.
