    Course

    The Bordeaux Marathon course

Bordeaux's marathon returns in November 2026 after a seven-year break, now organised by the Stade Bordelais athletics club and run entirely in daylight rather than as the old night race. The new course crosses the Garonne to cover both banks of the city and takes in the landmark streets and riverside quays of the historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

It is not two identical laps, and race reporting places the finish at Place de la Bourse by the Miroir d'Eau. The city is flat, so the only climbing to speak of comes on the bridge approaches over the river. The cut-off is 5 h 30, and a half marathon and the 10 km des Quais run the same morning.

    Weather on race day
Early November in Bordeaux is usually cool: about 7–14 °C through the morning, with rain on roughly two days in five and the odd breezy day along the open quays. Good marathon weather overall, so dress for a chilly start, keep a light layer for rain and hydrate steadily at the aid stations every 5 km.

    What to train for

A flat city marathon rewards even pacing, so make goal-pace work the core of the block: long runs of 28–32 km with 12–16 km at marathon pace.

Add short hill or bridge repeats of 200–400 m once a week so the river crossings do not break your rhythm late in the race.

Practise fuelling from aid stations spaced every 5 km, carrying a gel between them if you need more frequent carbohydrate.

    Taper

    Tapering for the Bordeaux Marathon

Start the taper two to three weeks before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week.

    Bordeaux Marathon training questions

How long should I train for the Bordeaux Marathon?

Most runners give a marathon sixteen to twenty weeks of focused training on top of an existing base. The plan above counts back from your actual race date, so if you have less time than that it builds the best plan the remaining weeks allow rather than pretending you have longer.

Is the Bordeaux Marathon course hilly?

Flat. Bordeaux's marathon returns in November 2026 after a seven-year break, now organised by the Stade Bordelais athletics club and run entirely in daylight rather than as the old night race.
