Course
The Little Oregon course
The 13K (about 8.2 miles) and the 5K both start at 9:00 a.m. just south of the South Mastick Picnic Area in Cleveland Metroparks' Rocky River Reservation. The 13K heads south through the river valley on bridle trails and trails, loops through the far end of the course and returns north to the start area, so the second half retraces much of the first.

The race gets its name from a single-track section lined with rows of pine trees that the organizers fondly compare to the Pacific Northwest. Official figures put the 13K at 323 feet of gain and loss and the 5K at just 81 feet, with the 13K's one real climb at about miles 3.5 to 4.3, where the trail rises roughly 100 feet out of the valley before dropping back. Expect soft, possibly muddy March footing rather than pavement.

- Distances
- 13K, 5K
- Weather on race day
- Late March near Cleveland usually brings a 9 a.m. start around 30–42 °F, with highs in the upper 40s, and rain, wind or a late snow shower are all possible. Trails can be wet or muddy, so wear shoes with some grip, dress for the cold first mile and carry a layer you can tie around your waist.
What to train for
Most of the course is gently rolling valley trail, so the key is comfortable aerobic running on soft ground: do at least one run a week on trails or grass to strengthen ankles and practice quick, light steps.
Prepare for the climb around mile 3.5 with 6 to 8 x 60 seconds uphill at 10K effort, then practice relaxing on the descent that follows.
Build a long run of 8 to 10 miles, finishing the last 2 miles at race effort, so the return leg feels strong.

Taper
Tapering for the Little Oregon
Start the taper ten to fourteen days before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course rolls, so keep one short session on undulating ground in the first taper week. With the race on March 20, 2027, your taper starts around March 8, 2027.
