Course
The Lake Mac Run course
Everything happens on the Lake Macquarie foreshore at The Esplanade, Warners Bay, with the half marathon starting at 7:15am and the 10.5 km at 7:30am. The course follows the lakeside between Warners Bay and Speers Point, on roads closed from Kings Road, Warners Bay, to Creek Reserve Road, Speers Point.

The half marathon covers two and a quarter laps and the 10.5 km a single lap, on a completely traffic-free route with an excellent surface. The organisers describe it as relatively flat with no hills of any consequence, so the lake views and a steady rhythm are what you will remember. Markers every kilometre and regular water stations make pacing straightforward.

- Field

- Weather on race day
- Mid-September on Lake Macquarie usually means a cool, crisp start around 10–14 °C, warming towards 21 °C by late morning, with moderate humidity and few rainy days. Spring breezes off the lake can pick up on exposed stretches, so start in a layer you can shed and tuck in behind other runners when it is windy.
What to train for
A flat, multi-lap course rewards even pacing rather than hill strength.
Build tempo runs of 20 to 40 minutes at half marathon effort on flat paths, and long runs of 16 to 20 km with the last 5 km at goal pace.
Laps make it easy to drift, so practise a plan for each lap: relaxed goal pace on the first, steady on the second, strong over the final quarter. For the 10.5 km, sessions such as 5 x 1.5 km at 10 km pace with 90 seconds of jogging are ideal.

Your build to race day
Taper
Tapering for the Lake Mac Run
Start the taper ten to fourteen days before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on September 12, 2027, your taper starts around August 31, 2027.
