Course
The Kielder Marathon course
The marathon is one almost entirely off-road lap of Kielder Water, northern Europe's largest man-made lake, deep in Kielder Forest Park in Northumberland. Runners follow forest tracks and lakeside trails around the reservoir, crossing the dam at about mile 17.25 and passing Tower Knowe near mile 19 before the final stretch to the finish.

The profile is undulating rather than mountainous, with rises and short climbs all the way round, so effort pacing pays far more than chasing even splits. The half marathon starts on the dam on Sunday, and the 10K on Saturday afternoon circles the Bull Crag Peninsula. Crowds are sparse in the forest, but the scenery is the reward and the reason it is billed as Britain's most beautiful marathon.

- Weather on race day
- Early October in Kielder is usually cool, around 7–13 °C at the 10:15 start, with a real chance of drizzle and a breeze off the open water. The forest gives shelter, but the dam and exposed lakeside stretches can feel colder, so bring a light layer you can tie round your waist. Cool air suits a long trail effort; keep drinking and fuelling, because you will be out longer than on a road marathon.
What to train for
Train for a trail marathon, not a road one: run at least half your long runs on gravel paths and forest tracks, ideally on rolling routes with repeated short climbs.
Build to 30–34 km long runs, and in the last six weeks do one 25–28 km run on hilly trail with the final hour at goal effort.
Practise running the climbs by effort, walking the steepest pitches if needed, and relaxing on the descents so the downhills come back to you. Set your goal 5–15% slower than your road marathon time and know the cut-offs: the dam by 15:45 and Tower Knowe by 16:00.

Taper
Tapering for the Kielder Marathon
Start the taper two to three weeks before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course rolls, so keep one short session on undulating ground in the first taper week. With the race on October 3, 2027, your taper starts around September 15, 2027.

Kielder Marathon training questions
How long should I train for the Kielder Marathon?
Most runners give a marathon sixteen to twenty weeks of focused training on top of an existing base. The plan above counts back from your actual race date, so if you have less time than that it builds the best plan the remaining weeks allow rather than pretending you have longer.

Rolling. The marathon is one almost entirely off-road lap of Kielder Water, northern Europe's largest man-made lake, deep in Kielder Forest Park in Northumberland.
